Marvellous Maths in Reception 16.12.22

Marvellous Maths in Reception

This week, we carried out a range of activities for consolidation. We focused on comparing numbers,  while keeping in mind that each number is one more than the one before it. We practised representing one more and one less using concrete resources. Another area we focused on was combining shapes.  We found that more than one shape can be combined to make a new shape. E.g. two triangles make a square.

We also spent some time working on the formation of numbers 1-10. The children used the ten town rhymes to help them form the numbers correctly.

Activities:

Adon: "I have 4 altogether"

Matthew: " 5 is one less than 6"

Aditi: " One more will make 8"

Layla: " I need one more to make 7"

Jayden: " One less than 5 is 4"

Ashton: " It's seal 6!"

Key vocabulary:

One more, one less, count, shapes, square, triangle, number

Nursery - Ideas for Snow Fun

Nursery - Snow Fun

Good Morning Nursery,

We hope you are enjoying the snow! Here are a few outdoor/indoor activities you could try.

1. Spray the snow - If you have an empty spray bottle add some water and food coloring and you can create your own Winter masterpieces by spraying the snow!

2. Add some diggers and people to the snow, you could even dig out some roads for your town. Or you could bring some snow inside and make a little snowy scene in a tray/pan.

3. Stack the snow balls! Could could count how many you can put on top of each other or you could line them up and make a snow caterpillar.

And when you are finished playing outside you could warm up inside and listen to the story of Elmer in the Snow. Have a lovely day.

Nursery E for Excellence 09/12/22

Introducing our two superstars, Keon and Emir H who have very deservingly earned their E for Excellence certificates this week.

Emir, is an excellent role model. He is always kind and polite to everyone he meets. He is always keen and eager to help and carry out jobs, showing a great sense of responsibility. What more could we ask for!

Keon, is already developing a fantastic love of stories. His knowledge and understanding of the story, 'We're Going On a Bear Hunt' is truly outstanding. During Keon's independent play he was able to recall the story whilst re - enacting it. A wonderful story teller in the making!

Nursery's week of wonderful learning - 09.12.22

We have had a fun filled week of Christmas Activities and celebrations

We started the week with our Christmas performance and Wow! What a performance it was. All of the children performed beautifully and we could not be prouder. We look forward to being able to share the video with you next week.

Our focus story this week has been 'Elmer's Christmas'

The children have enjoyed sharing this story and have been able to recall many parts of the story:
'Elmer has a Christmas Tree' (Idris)
'There are a lot of elephants' (Oscar)
'A hundred, thousand, million elephants' (Luna)
'Elmer is all colourful' (Idhaya)
'Looking forward to seeing Papa Red' (Nusayr)

Oscar and Daniel enjoyed the story so much that they decided to share it again.

The children enjoy also enjoyed exploring a variety of materials to design a Christmas jumper. An abundance of creativity, developing independence when selecting their own resources and as the children have been practising their cutting skills this week, many were able to then cut out their own jumpers.

Our nursery children have enjoyed the change in weather and have been very curious to explore the ice outside. We have had some wonderful discussions about how water freezes and how snow is formed.

We have had so much fun this week that we couldn't fit it all into one blog. We will update all with our amazing learning in another blog very soon.

Marvellous Maths in Reception 2.12.22

            Marvellous Maths in Reception

This week we explored the properties of 4 sided shapes, with the focus being on squares and rectangles. The children used their knowledge to recognise everyday shapes inside and outside the classroom.

Have a look at this video to explore the properties of four sided shapes.

Some ideas for exploring shapes at home:

Go on a shape hunt- What shapes can you find in your house? How many 4 sided shapes can you spot?

Cut out different shapes from any scrap paper you have at home. What can you make with your shapes?

Activities:

Elyssa: "I found a square!"

Mason: "This one has two long sides like a rectangle"

Rory: " A square has 4 sides"

Adam: " They are both a circle"

Jayden: " They all have 4 sides"

Isabella: " Rectangles have 2 short sides"

Key Vocabulary:

Shapes, square, rectangle, circle, triangle, corners, sides, 4 sided shape, long sides, short sides

I'm Stickman, I'm Stickman, I'm Stickman, that's me!

 Stickman adventures in Reception

The children in Reception have been reading the story 'Stickman' by Julia Donaldson. On Friday, we had a day of Stickman adventures!

First, the children went outside on the hunt for the perfect stick. Then, they got creative making their own Stickman using eyes, string and pipe cleaners. In the afternoon, we turned the classroom into a cosy story time spot with comfy cushions, blankets and fairy lights. We then read the story together and acted it out using our very on Stickman.

'It's all cosy!' - Sophie

'Wow! I love it!' - Henry

'Ooo it's very Christmassy in here! It's like a Winter Wonderland!' - Zhyan

The children enjoyed using our favourite phrases form the story;

'I'm Stick man, I'm Stickman, I'm Stickman, that's me'

'I long to go back to the family tree'

'Stickman, oh Stickman beware of the...'

What a great way to practice all of the rich vocabulary we have been learning!

Finally, we all enjoyed a delicious cup of hot chocolate finished off with cream and chocolate biscuits (provided by those cheeky elves of course!)

NURSERY E FOR EXCELLENCE 2.12.22

NURSERY E FOR EXCELLENCE 2.12.22

This week the children have been learning about the 'The Jolly Christmas Postman'. It has been great to see the children enjoy their first local trip to the postbox this week. They have been very mature and responsible when walking outside of the school.

These children have worked extremely hard and have been rewarded for all of their determination and efforts.

Isaac: For really making some great progress so far this term. Isaac is now happy to come into the nursery, takes part in a range of activities and has made a great group  of friends where he is able to turn take and co-operate in group play. Well done Isaac, , it is great to see you so settled.

Alice: For consistently being a role model in Nursery for the other children. Alice always does her pupil jobs and has been extremely helpful to both adults and peers. Alice shows exemplary behaviour every day, all of the time, which includes modelling kind words to all of the other children.

Nursery 28.11.22-2.12.22

 The Jolly Christmas Postman

This week the children have been reading 'The Jolly Christmas Postman.' They all made their own Christmas cards, put them in an envelope and went on a walk to the postbox to post their Christmas card. We hope you enjoy receiving them in the post.

First the children made their Christmas cards and wrote their message, here are some examples of their amazing writing.

Then they placed their card in the envelope and stuck down the stamp.

Finally, they walked to the postbox to post their card, which I am sure the children thought was the most exciting part.

Christmas Tree

Thank you so much to Luna's mum who very kindly donated a Christmas tree to the Nursery. The children have really enjoyed putting the tree up and have been super helpful rearranging the baubles since it has been put up.

Parent Stay and Learn

A big thank you to the parents who attended the stay and learn sessions this week. It was great to see you having so much fun interacting with the children. The children loved having you, we even had a few unexpected tears when it was time to say goodbye.

Reminder about the Christmas Nativity Monday 5th December-10:45am and 2:30pm

By now you should have all received two tickets for Monday's Christmas Performance.

Please remember to send your child in with either party clothes or Christmas jumpers on the day of the nativity.

The concert will take place in the Charlton Hall (Year 1 Building). You can access this hall through the gates on Faringdon Avenue (where the KS1 and KS2 children enter in the mornings).

Thank you and good luck

I would like to thank all of the Nursery parents for their support and commitment this term. I have loved teaching the Nursery children and I will miss them all very much. I would like to wish them every success in their learning journey, I am sure they will achieve great things. Today is my last day at Broadford as I begin my own adventure into parenthood and the children in Nursery have taught me so much already.

Take care and good luck everyone, you are all superstars!

Mrs Rice
