Superworm

This week we have been reading the story 'Superworm',a story about a super strong worm that saves the day.This afternoon we looked closely at some real life worms. We learnt lots of new facts such as worms have no eyes, worms use tiny hairs on their bodies to help them grip the earth and baby worms are called 'wormlets'.

The children were very brave and gently held the worms describing how it felt as they wriggled around in their hands. After we had all looked at the worms we added them to our wormeries so the children can watch as they dig through the earth and create tunnels.

The 'Superheroes' topic is proving a hit!

The children have jumped straight into our new topic Superheros. They've loved dressing up and we have been encouraging them to try and dress themselves or ask a friend for help before asking an adult. There has been lots of emergency calls on the telephones asking for a superhero to save the day. Anais exclaimed "Quick! There's a cat stick up a tree" and Freddie Sheppard "Oh no there's a fire!".

New Amazing Animal Topic

The children took delight in exploring the Amazing Animal topic. The vets was a great success and many children followed the trail to find the pets. They developed language skills and gave meaning to the marks they made.

It is great to see everyone back in school. We are going to begin our new topic of Amazing Animals. The children have requested that the role play area is turned into a Vet.  We will be modelling and role playing in the Vets this week.  We will also be making some biscuits and junk modelling.

 Our story of the week is ‘Mog and the Vet’.  They will get lots of opportunity to retell the story and act it out.  Our songs of the week will be ‘This Little Piggy’ and ‘The Owl and the Pussycat’.

We are going to begin to introduce the phonics, the first sound we introduce is ‘m’.  However we will continue with all of our literacy games which include rhyming and alliteration activities, along with our shape and number activities.

 Personal, Social and Emotional

• Responds to the feelings and wishes of others.
• Remembers where objects belong.
• Expresses own preferences and interests.

Communication and Language

• Understands 'who', 'what', 'where' in simple questions(e.g. Who's that/can? What's that? Where is.?).
• Developing understanding of simple concepts (e.g. big/little).
• Identifies action words by pointing to the right picture e.g. “Who's jumping?

Literacy

• Shows interest in play with sounds, songs and rhymes.
• Repeats words or phrases from familiar stories.
• Fills in the missing word or phrase in a known rhyme, story or game, e.g. 'Humpty Dumpty sat on a …'.

Physical Development:

• Shows control in holding and using jugs, hammers, books and mark making tools.
• Makes connections between their movement and the marks they make
• Beginning to use three fingers (tripod grip) to hold writing tools

 Mathematics

• Notices simple shapes and patterns in pictures
• Uses some language of quantities such as ‘more’ or ‘alot’.
• Selects a small number of objects from a group when asked, for example, 'please give me one', 'please give me two'.

 Understanding of the World

• Enjoys playing with small world models, such as farms.
• Seeks to acquire basic skills in turning on and operating some ICT equipment
• Learns that they have similarities and differences that connect them to, and distinguish them from, others.

Expressive Arts and Design

• Joins in singing favourite songs.
• Notices and is interested in the effects of making movements which leave marks.
• Experiments with blocks, colours and marks

The children can choose how they present their learning challenge outcomes to their teacher or class however the table below details some ideas for the learning challenge.

Eating some most delicious grubs - yum, yum
One jumped into the pool

Reception Newsletter 4.1.15

Term:  Spring 1                        Date 4.1.15

Happy New Year and welcome back! We hope you all enjoyed the festive celebrations and are looking forward to the term ahead. This term our topic is going to be ‘Superheroes’.
Each week we will be looking at a different theme. This week we are focusing on the story 'Superworm' by Julia Donaldson. 

Personal, Social and Emotional

•  Initiates conversations, attends to and takes account of what others say.
•  Explains own knowledge and understanding, and asks appropriate questions of others.
• Through our adult led activities this week we will be supporting the children to share their ideas and thoughts in small groups. They will need to listen to other children's ideas and respond with their own comments. This will also be encouraged in the children's play.

 Communication and Language

• Children  use complex sentences to link their thoughts.. e.g. He is sad because he fell over. 
• Children will be encouraged to extend their vocabulary when observing the worms and creatures. They will be encouraged to explore the meaning of new words. 

Literacy

The children have been assessed again for RWI and they are making good progress. We will be focusing on ensuring all children can orally blend e.g. when they hear c-a-t know that is it cat. The children also need to be able to decode 'alien' or 'nonsense' words such as z-o-p this is to ensure they can use their phonic knowledge to decode any word they come across in their reading.  We will send out reading words every Friday to support this. 

• Can segment the sounds in simple words and blend them together.
• Uses some clearly identifiable letters to communicate meaning, representing some sounds correctly and in sequence. 
• Linking with our story of the week the children will have the opportunity to;
• Write potions for the Wizard in the story.
• Think of describing words linked to the character in the story.
• Help make Wanted Posters to find the missing Superworm character. 

 Physical Development:

• Children will be developing their balancing skills using climbing equipment in the hall.
• Children will be learning to jump safely from equipment and land with two feet. 

 Mathematics

• Beginning to use the vocabulary involved in subtraction. 
• Beginning to find one less/ more than numbers to 10. 

Understanding of the World

• Show care and concern for living things and the environment. The children will be helping to build a Wormery and observing worms and insects this week. They will be looking closely at similarities and differences and will be encouraged to comment and answer questions.

Expressive Arts and Design

• Manipulates materials to achieve a planned effect.
• Selects tools and techniques needed to shape, assemble and join materials they are using.
