Reception Campfires!

Next week each Reception class will be having a class campfire. We are inviting parents and carers to join their child for the campfire from 2.15pm. If there weather is particularly bad, we may have to reschedule but will keep you posted. We will be toasting marshmallows and singing songs and hope you can all join us!

Aspen and the Beanstalk

Reception have been looking at the topic of 'Growing and Changing', enjoying 'Jasper's Beanstalk' and 'Jack and the Beanstalk'. After reading 'Jasper's Beanstalk' we were able to work out how best to plant our seeds, nurture them and hopefully grow some tall beanstalks!

We have discussed what a seed needs to grow, and we decided that a mixture of sunlight, respiration and water would help our beanstalks grow so we decided to plant ours by the window where they would get best access to all these things! 

We found our beans, we planted it, we watered it and we have been checking on our beanstalks everyday to see how much they are growing. 

First we saw the beans burst open, next we saw the roots spread through the soil and then we saw our shoots and leaves start growing up. Everyday we use a pipette to water our beans to ensure that they don't over-water them. 

We have been comparing our beanstalks everyday, commenting on our observations and seeing whose are growing the fastest! 

We are looking forward to planting our beanstalks outdoors and seeing how tall they can grow when they have direct access to sunlight!

Apple Class visit Central Park!

This afternoon Apple Class embarked on their trip to Central Park! With lots of excited faces we set off in the perfect weather. On route the children looked at the local environment, ticking off things they saw on route. There was much discussion over who the park belonged to, where the children lived and how many buses they could spot.

On arrival to Central Park, we recapped a few rules to keep us safe and then it was off to play! The slides and the zip wire were a big hit and there were lots of smiling faces. The children had time to squeeze in a quick snack and another play with their friends before it was time to head uphill back to school! Thank you to all our parent helpers without you we wouldn't be able to organise trips like these.

Stay and Learn Nursery -Thursday 16th May

Please join us for our Nursery Stay and Learn session based around Understanding the World. We will have hands on practical challenges that you can complete with your child during the session to support the children to learn about the world around them.
Morning sessions will start at 10.15am.
Afternoon sessions will start at 1.45pm.
Sessions will last for one hour, parents can take children home when the sessions are finished. 
Parents with children who attend all day are welcome to attend either session. If working parents struggle to make sessions we would also be very happy to welcome other family members!

Fee, Fi, Fo, Fum!

We have loved reading Jack and the Beanstalk this week in Reception. We have been busy observing the growth of our own beans and building beanstalks at the finger gym. There was even a surprise video of magic beanstalks growing in our classrooms. 

The Reception children returned from lunch this week to find a collection of footprints in their classroom and a letter from the giant. Their challenge was to work out which footprint belonged to the giant by measuring them all. The children worked together to use multilink cubes to measure the length of the footprints, they then compared how long each footprint was.

Dear Parents and Carers,

The children have loved reading the story of Jack and the Beanstalk and were shocked to find that beanstalks had grown in their classrooms over the weekend. They have also been busy checking on the progress of the beans that they planted.



Looking forward to year one, we are going to begin encouraging the children to walk down the ramp independently to their classroom in the mornings. There is no rush to do this immediately, but only when you and your child feel they are ready. Staff will welcome the children as usual and support with choosing lunch or putting their things away if needed. Looking forward, we would hope most of the children will be able to achieve this by the end of the summer term.

This week we will be reading 'Titch’ and ‘The Tiny Seed’ as we continue with our Growing and Changing topic. We will be planting sunflowers and looking at baby photos. Thank you to everyone who has emailed or sent in baby photos, there is still time if you would like to send one in for the children to look at.

Each class will be visiting the park on a seperate afternoon this week. Please make sure they have suncream or a coat depending on the weather and sensible shoes.

Communication and Language
We are encouraging children to use talk to organise, sequence and clarify thinking, ideas, feelings and events.

Physical Development
As we continue to develop the children’s fine motor strength we are now also focussing on their letter and number formation as well. Particularly encouraging and correcting backwards formed letters and numbers. The children are beginning to practise for sports day events in their PE lessons.

Maths
We will be focusing of the number 15 this week. This week will be introducing the concepts of doubling and halving. We will be doubling Numicon and numbers as well as learning the doubling rap. We will be cutting string and shapes in half as well as sharing objects in half.

Literacy
We will be writing recounts of our trip to Central park. The children will also be encouraged to write and send letters to their friends and family.

Understanding the World
We will be caring for our beans and observing them grow over the next few weeks. The children will also be helping to plant our herb garden outside. This week we will also plant some sunflowers. The children will be looking at baby photos and discussing similarities and differences between themselves and other children.
