Topic: 'The world Around us (including Cultural and fantasy Stories)'.
Last week the children thoroughly enjoyed going on their local area walks and talking about the features of our own immediate environment and how our environment varies from where Handa lives in Africa. This week we will be basing our learning around the story of 'Handa's Hen.'
Your child will be taking part in the following activities within the seven areas of development (activities are subject to change, depending on the children’s interests; however, the skills remain the same):
Personal, Social and Emotional
- Children talk about how they and others show feelings, talk about their own and others’ behaviour, and its consequences, and know that some behaviour is unacceptable.
- They are confident to speak in a familiar group, will talk about their ideas, and will choose the resources they need for their chosen activities.
Communication and Language
- Sharing the story Handa’s Hen. Where do they think the story is set? Why? Encourage children to retell the story using different props.
- Children answer 'how' and 'why' questions about their experiences and in response to stories or events.
Physical Development
- Children show good control and co-ordination in large and small movements.
- They move confidently in a range of ways, safely negotiating space.
- Fine manipulative skills set up daily to improve children’s pencil control.
Literacy
- We will be continuing with our daily Read, Write Inc. groups.
- Please keep practising ‘Fred talking’ the words we send home and encouraging your child to you’re their ‘Fred Fingers’ to help them spell the words.
- The children need to be bringing in their reading books daily. We praise the children who regularly read at home to an adult and have a reward system in place
- Writing our names encouraging correct pencil grip.
- Writing captions for the photos we take on our local area walk
- Children use their phonic knowledge to write words in ways which match their spoken sound.
Mathematics
- Children solve problems, including doubling, halving and sharing.
- Weighing the different fruits to find out which is heavier or lighter?
- Completing addition calculation, learning to count on from a given number.
- Children use everyday language to talk about size, weight, capacity, position, distance, time and money to compare quantities and objects and to solve problems.
- Orders two items by weight or capacity.
Understanding of the World
- Looking at similarities and differences between themselves and Handa in Africa.
- Looking at the different traditions we have and others too
- Talking about the features of their own immediate environment and how environments might vary from one another
Expressive Arts and Design
- Children safely use and explore a variety of materials, tools and techniques, experimenting with colour, design, texture, form and function.
- Enjoying our daily dance warm up to the ‘5 a day’ fitness programme.
- Observational drawings of fruits.
- Fruit printings.
- Children sing songs, make music and dance, and experiment with ways of changing them.
Learning Challenge
Each half term we will be setting our pupils a challenge related to their learning. We believe that it is important for us to provide guidance for parents on how their children's learning can be extended at home.
The learning challenge will include either a nursery rhyme, illustration or a piece of music. Please talk to your child about the challenge and help them to engage in their learning. The children can choose how they present their learning challenge outcomes to their teacher or class.
Poem/Song to learn: Teddy bear, Teddy bear
Teddy bear, teddy bear,
Turn around!
Teddy bear, teddy bear,
Touch the ground!
Teddy bear, teddy bear,
Jump up high!
Teddy bear, teddy bear,
Touch the sky!
Teddy bear, teddy bear,
Bend down low!
Teddy bear, teddy bear,
Touch you toes!
Teddy bear, teddy bear,
Turn out the light!
Teddy bear, teddy bear,
Say good night!
