The 'Smoothie Bike' in Reception

The Reception children had great fun celebrating Comic Relief.  Thank you for all of your donations for the charity event.  It is important for children to take part in charity events, as this helps to develop their understanding of the needs of others.

All of the Reception children went outside to see the smoothie bike in action, we were very lucky to have some year 6 helpers as we couldn't quite reach the pedals!  We had great fun adding the ingredients (fruit and juice) and peddling the bike to blend the fruit.  The children demonstrated reciprocity as they cheered their peers on, its was a great team building tool.  Iyinope said "It was funny went Miss Poulter got on the bike".

Toast Station in Nursery

The Nursery children have enjoyed using our new self service toast station this week. The area has been set up so the children can use the resources more independently. They have been taking their slice of bread, putting it in the toaster and patiently waiting for it to pop back up. After they have all remembered to wash their hands and cutlery. The area gives children the chance to develop their self care skills. They have also been enjoying talking to each other as they have munched their toast at the table!

"Scrape on more butter.." Maisie
"I think this brown toast is the best." Nathaniel

John's Enormous Turnip!

The story we have been focusing on in Nursery this week is 'The Enormous Turnip'. John clearly enjoyed the story as he went home and told his Mum all about the enormous turnip the characters had tried to pull out of the ground. The next morning John came to school with a tray of sprouting turnips ready for us to plant in our Nursery flower bed. The children were really excited to see the little plants and wondered how big they would grow. A big thank you to John and his Mum for the plants, what a lovely way to enhance the children's learning!

Dear Parents,

This week we will be reading the story 'The Enormous Turnip'. The children have enjoyed planting herbs, flowers and bulbs in our Nursery garden and we will be teaching them how to look after the plants and looking at the changes over time.

Personal, Social and Emotional:
We are encouraging the children to talk to other children when playing and create their own games. We are encouraging the children to identify the feelings of characters in stories and talk about their own feelings. We will also be making Mother's Day cards and talking about things they do to help their Mums/Nannys at home.

Communication and Language/Literacy:
We are encouraging the children to learn Nursery Rhymes and join in with actions to help them re-tell these. We are focusing on learning the rhymes ''Two Little Dickie Birds'' and "Little Bo Peep" this week. They are encouraged to listen carefully to adults telling the rhymes and say the missing words.
As well as continuing to point out rhymes and play games with rhyming words the children are being encouraged to hear the initial sounds in words. We have been playing lots of games to encourage them to identify words that start with the same sound e.g. 'ball' 'banana' 'beach' and they have been encouraged to listen out for the initial sound in their names.
The children are always encouraged to use the correct tenses and word endings when talking e.g. "I slid down the slide." "I found a pretty bead." "Soon it will be my Birthday." Please continue to model this at home. Encourage the children to talk to you in full sentences and share their ideas.
Physical Development:
The children are continuing to develop their throwing and catching skills.
We are focusing on ensuring children are able to hold scissors correctly and are enjoying daily
'Dough Disco' sessions to develop the muscles in the children's fingers.

This week we are focusing on the children's number recognition. They will be encouraged to match numbers using egg boxes and sparkly eggs.
