Reception Home Learning Week 5

Good morning Reception!

Another great week of home learning and we are so impressed at how you are all tackling this new normal. Keep in touch and keep sending photos and work. We love hearing from you and please, please contact us if you have any questions or need to talk. We are checking the email box regularly and this is the best way to get in touch (eyfs@broadford.learningfederation.org.uk).

Everyone is doing a great job at their spellings, something we do not usually do so formally in Reception. So well done, and keep it up!

Early Years VE Day Challenge

Friday is the 75th VE Day, a day where we remember the sacrifice people made during the Second World War, and keep hope alive in our hearts that such loss and sadness will never happen again. Many people have said they will be having a picnic at home, in their gardens...in their living rooms and will be wearing red, white and blue.

To celebrate VE day your challenge is to dress in red, white and blue. You could make some bunting to decorate your house. Why not go on a red, white and blue hunt. How many objects can you find of each colour in your house? Perhaps you could plan a special picnic to enjoy with your household!

To learn more about VE Day with your child you could look at this PowerPoint together.

Phonics Hunt
Mrs Hallowell has been enjoying these phonics hunts with her children. There are multiple lists so you can play again and again. The children have to read the word on the list and then find the item in the house, before ticking it off. There are hunts for inside and outside. If you don’t have a printer, don’t worry, you could just write the list of words out for your child. Click on the links below for the phonics hunts.

Maths

After speaking to some families last week some parents asked for some more support with Maths at home. Our first piece of advice is to keep it practical!

Here is an overview of what we cover in the summer term:

  • Ordering numbers to 20, and saying one more or less than a given number.
  • Addition and subtraction using concrete objects (think lego, buttons, pasta, sweets, cars) or a number line to support.
  • Doubling and halving numbers.
  • Measuring and comparing - weight, length, height, capacity, size.
  • Naming and describing the properties of 2D and 3D shapes.

White Rose Maths
This week White Rose Maths work is all based on the well known story, The Very Hungry Caterpillar! If you do not have the book at home, you could listen to it on YouTube. Take a look at the activities, choose the ones you would like to do and let us know how you get on. https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/early-years/

Other Maths Activities

  • Practice counting backwards from 20. Can you start at different numbers? You could challenge your child to write the backwards sequence of numbers, giving them different numbers to start at. See this sheet for an idea or make your own version on paper.

  • Find things in your house that are shorter and longer than a pencil. Once you've got an array of items, can you put these in order from shortest to longest. Remember when we talk about length the items should be laying down.

Writing

  • Look out of your window, can you write a list of all the things you can see. Remember to use a sound mat to help, see link below for one.

  • Write a magic potion. Plan your ideas first and think about your letter formation. Maybe you could make a potion in the kitchen or the garden before or afterwards.
Other Activities

  • Research the life cycle of a caterpillar. Can you draw pictures to represent the four different stages? Don’t forget to label them.
  • Make a butterfly painting, picture or collage. You could use the old school symmetry painting technique or come up with your own idea.

  • Learn to play snap with a partner.
  • Organise a teddy bears picnic with your toys. Perhaps you could make some sandwiches.

Spellings

It has been great seeing how hard you have been practicing your spellings and how well you have done in the weekly spelling tests. We have included some red words this week (think about the tricky bit) and some high frequency words for you to practice. Remember to keep practising the other words you might have found tricky so you can use these in your writing.
Practice writing these spelling everyday, ready for the test on Fridays. One of your teachers will read out these spellings in a video for you to have a go at home. You can find the test on the Facebook page or through the blog on the school website. Good luck!

Reading
Teach Your Monster to Read  -  https://www.teachyourmonstertoread.com/

This is an interactive game where children design their own monster and complete a series of phonics and reading based games. It is free to set up an account on a computer or laptop and can also be used on tablets and phones.
We had a little play and think the children will really enjoy it. There are three different levels to start from. You can exit or close the game at any point and when you log back in it will start from the same point. It is probably a good idea to agree a time limit with your child before they start.

Oxford Owls Online Books

Read together everyday. This should include story times where you read to your child and times when your child reads to you. RWI have just uploaded some more free e-books which are perfect for your child to read.

RWI Phonics
There will be a new sound taught each day along with a spelling video. Please see the below table for starting times, although they will remain on Facebook and Youtube for 24hours. Please join in every day with these videos, just search ‘Ruth Miskin Training’ on Facebook or Youtube. If you are unsure which level your child is working at please drop us an email.

They have also shared a guide for parents that contains lots of information. If you scroll down the page there are lots of online resources including books, ditty reading sheets, worksheets, videos, green word slide shows.
