Reception Learning - Week 8

Key Information

  • Reminder - Monday 1st November 2021 is an INSET day, therefore the school will be closed to pupils.
  • We no longer need Milk cartons - Thank you to everyone who brought them in.
  • The weather is likely to be colder when we return from half term - Please ensure your child comes to school with a labelled coat, hat and gloves.

Black History Month
This week we have looked at the history of carnivals and where it originated from. We have been listening and dancing to carnival music this week and have loved  seeing all the amazing costumes and headdresses. The reception children have made their own amazing headdresses to wear for our carnival day!  Look how amazing they all looked!

Jace -  'My crown has green and yellow feathers on it'
Finley - 'I'm going to dance like this in the conga'

Harry- "I have a green feather on my crown"
Gabia- "Conga, conga, conga"

Maths

This week we were focusing on comparing numbers. The children are learning that as we count, each number is one ore than the number before. We are also exploring that as we count backwards, the number is one less than the number before. The children have been using a range of resources to represent one more and one less, building on the confidence with numbers.

Key Vocabulary: one more, one less, forwards, backwards, compare, same, difference

Zofia  'There are more dogs here'

Noah ' This one has more cars'

Hayden- "that has less, that has more"
Bernice- "6 candies"

Literacy
Our key text this week is Elmer. The children have loved reading a range of stories about Elmer and celebrating the idea that everyone is different and it is good to be different. As part of our literacy, we have been looking instruction and sequencing events. We decided to put this in to a real life context and follow instructions to make elephant shaped cookies!

One of the Early Years Characteristics of Effective Learning is being proud of how they accomplished something, not just the end result.  Our children thoroughly enjoyed the process of baking and were all very proud of what they had accomplished.

Key Vocabulary: mix, stir, pour, crack, together, first, then, next, after, finally

Phonics Learning

This week in phonics, the children were assessed. After half term, the children will be placed into their new Read, Write, Inc groups.

We have been really focusing on our oral blending skills. We use pure sounds ('m' not 'muh', 's' not 'suh' etc) so that your child will be able to blend the sounds into words more easily.
At school we use a puppet called Fred who is an expert on sounding out words!  We call this 'Fred Talk' E.g. m-o-p, c-a-t, m-a-n , sh-o-p. Fred can only say the sounds in a world and needs your child to help him read the word. Fred will say the sounds and children will work out the word. For Example, Fred will say the sounds  c-a-t, and the children will say the word cat.

Please practice oral blending with your child at home when reading your ditty sheets and books.

At this week's parents evening you would have been given a copy of the speed sound chart and a copy of the  writing rhymes for each sound. Please use this to support you child with their reading and writing.
