Reception Trip

Date: Friday 27th May 2022.

Dear Parents and Carers,

We are delighted to inform you that a trip has been booked for our Reception children on Monday 11th July 2022. We will be visiting the Sealife Centre in Southend.

On Monday 11th July 2022, all children are expected at school on time, so that we can leave promptly at 9:30am. We will be travelling by coach and expect to arrive back at school by 3pm - we will ensure to keep parents updated on our whereabouts via the school's Facebook page.

Children are required to wear school uniform; please ensure that all children wear appropriate footwear and have a waterproof coat. The weather is likely to be warm, so please ensure your child has a sun hat and has had sun cream applied.  We will be eating lunch at the Sealife Centre, so all children will need to take a packed lunch with them. Should your child require a lunch provided by the school, please indicate their preferences on the form below. All lunch orders must be completed by Friday 24th June 2022, so that we can process your order in time for your child’s trip. Alternatively, children can bring their own packed lunch in a carrier bag that is clearly labelled with their name and class.

The Reception trip will incur a voluntary charge of £12 per child that should be paid via sQuid. This charge covers the coach transport and their entry to the Southend Sealife Centre. To make payment log on to your sQuid account and follow the steps provided.

Please either complete the form attached to this letter and return to the class teacher, or scan this QR code and complete it online (it should take no more than a couple of minutes).

We look forward to a wonderful day out!

Yours faithfully,

Mrs Hathaway

Book of the week

The children have enjoyed a selection of stories linked to Pirates including this fiction book:

Peppa at the Aquarium by Peppa Pig TM.

Nursery rhyme of the week

This week the children learnt the pirate themed song ‘I’m a pirate’, here are the words:

I’m a pirate

I’m a pirate

Yo, ho, ho!

Yo, ho, ho!

I can sail the ocean

I can sail the ocean

Yo, ho, ho!

Yo, ho, ho!

I’m a pirate

Yo, ho, ho!

I can dig for treasure

I’m a pirate

Yo, ho, ho!

I can wear my eye-patch

I can wear my eye-patch

Yo, ho, ho!

Learning Through Play

This week’s learning has involved:

  • Role playing as pirates

  • Making telescopes

  • Walking ‘the plank’

  • Enjoying storybooks

  • Creating maps

  • Ordering numbers to ten and counting on

  • Creating an octopus in preparation of our next topic Under the Sea!

Ten Town Input

As part of their number understanding learning, the children were introduced to ‘Seal Six’ this week. They learnt:

  • How to form the digit

  • How to show the number on their fingers

  • Finding sets of six

  • Exploring the numbers that make up five

You may also like to watch Numberblocks number 6.

Phonic Input

The focus for this week was continuing to learn to hear and count syllables, the children:

  • Used actions to count syllables in words picked out from the bag

  • Identifying syllables in their names through body movements

Here is an example of how you can learn to count syllables at home: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iwV5I039az0

2 year old focus

Literacy: The story of the week has been ‘In the Ocean’. The story includes a game of I Spy and as it was read the children were able to practice using initial phonemes. They did well at naming some sea creatures.

Mathematics; Comparing size and weights:

Blue group were shown objects of different sizes and weights. After discussing their properties, they were able to tell which objects were small, big, heavy and light.

Preparing for Reception

Each week we will include a tip to help prepare your child for reception; although it seems a long way off the summer term will shortly pass and September will be here before we know it!

Tip of the week:

This week the tip is to support your child to retell a story in their own words. Whilst the children haven’t learnt how to read yet, they can use their understanding of the pictures in a storybook to help them retell a story in their own words.

Choose a book to read several times with your child asking open questions and encouraging them to make predictions throughout the story. The next time they come to read it, encourage them to use their own words along with the pictures to retell the story

Focus child Meetings

Each week children will be chosen to be observed by their keyworker. Emails will be sent home to inform parents of the upcoming parent meeting taking place the following week, either in person or via telephone. Parents will have an opportunity to complete a form asking questions and sharing concerns they may have for the key worker to answer during the parent meeting. This form will be sent via email. Please check your emails weekly for school communications and evidence me parents share from your children's teachers. Parents are welcome to upload pictures and videos of their children at home.
