RECEPTION LEARNING - SUMMER 2 WEEK 1
Maths
In maths this week we have be learning about doubling. To get a double of a number, we add the same number to itself. The children have doubled a range of different objects, used their fingers to double and learnt two new songs. See them here;
The children were given the challenge of doubling the amount of spots on a lady bird. It was great to see their mathematical thinking while doubling the amount of spots. We also wrote our own number sentences showing we were adding numbers to themselves.
Bentley- "2 and 2 makes 4"
Fatima- "3 and 3 equals 6, now there is 6 dots"
Alexandra: "Double four is eight!"
Noah: 'Double two is four"
Literacy
This week we started reading Handa's Surprise. Handa is a young girl who lives in a village in Kenya. She decides to take seven different fruits in a basket to her friend Akeyo who lives in a nearby village. Handa walks to Akeyo's village with the basket of fruit balanced on her head. On her journey, each fruit is taken by a different animal until no fruit is left. As she is nearing Akeyo's village, a goat breaks free from the post it is tied to and heads straight towards a tangerine tree which Handa is walking under. The goat headbutts the tree causing tangerines to fall into Handa's basket. When Handa reaches Akeyo's village, she has a shock to see tangerines in her basket. Akeyo is very happy as tangerines are her favourite fruit. We have celebrated our differences and spoken about differences between the United Kingdom and Africa including animals and fruits. Listen to the story here;
Our literacy activity involved looking at a range of fruits including avocados, bananas, mangoes, pineapples and oranges. We used a range of adjectives to describe all the fruits. The children came up with some fantastic describing words.
Chirag- "Pineapple is hard and spiky"
Emma - "Orange is round"
Millen “ Oranges are very round and juicy”
Reception Stay and Play Session
This week we invited parents to join us in our OPAL play (Outdoor Play and Learning) .We were amazed at how much support you showed and how many of you lovely parents came to our stay and play session. We hope you enjoyed the afternoon and gained an insight in to our OPAL vision for the school and more importantly our children.
OPAL is an award-winning, mentor supported school improvement programme that addresses all the areas that schools must plan for if they want to strategically and sustainably improve the quality of their play opportunities. We are lucky to be involved in such a great program.
Playing outdoors in rich play environments is one of the best ways for children to develop social skills, build resilience, make more friends, be more creative and care more about the planet.
Click here to watch a video of how the OPAL programme has helped transform school playtimes and to find out more about OPAL head over to their website.
With our carers, we built dens, blew bubbles, played in the mud kitchen, explored, played with water and much more!
