Dear Parents and Carers,                                Term: Spring 1

Firstly we would like to wish you all a very Happy New Year! As you are all aware, we have moved to remote learning for the next two weeks. We all hope that this period of home learning will only last for two weeks and we will wait for any further updates from the Government. Please email us at eyfs@broadford.havering.sch.uk, contact us using your Evidence Me app or please contact the school office on 01708 342880. If you have any queries, concerns or questions.

At the moment, the most important elements of learning are:

  • reading to and with your child each day, sharing the love of reading.

  • accessing the RWI virtual sound sessions. (Top Tip: Split the sessions into bite size chunks throughout the day.)

  • encouraging writing - making it little and often is best. (For example, practicing  name-writing,  mark-making, letter formation, writing cvc words independently.)

  • basic number skills such as  counting, recognising and ordering  numbers to 10 and beyond 10.  Matching numerals and quantity.

Our remote learning will be posted using the school blog page, Facebook page and through Evidence Me. If you do not have access to Evidence Me please email us at eyfs@broadford.havering.sch.uk . We are in the process of making further improvements to our provision and further information with regards to online learning and provision for home learning will be updated soon.

Work can be submitted using the  Evidence Me app, and emailing the EYFS mailbox at eyfs@broadford.havering.sch.uk . Teachers will then provide feedback and ‘next steps’ to further consolidate or extend learning where appropriate. The children (and adults) can ask their teachers questions, send pictures, drawings, writing or creative work to their class teachers. Please keep sharing all of your hard work! We absolutely love receiving it!

Reception Home Learning Timetable

Please see the timetable below for Reception home learning timings and sessions. Families can decide the best times for these to take place. However we recommend that the children only sit and work for half an hour maximum at a time. Younger children can find it harder to concentrate for longer periods of time. It is recommended to have breaks between the sessions.

Spring 1

This half term we will be reading a selection of traditional tales during our topic sessions. These stories will include: The Gingerbread Man, The Three Little Pigs, Three Billy Goats Gruff, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, The Little Red Hen and our focus text On Sudden Hill. Below are some of the objectives we will be focusing on this term.

Communication and Language

Children are often familiar with traditional tales and they provide the opportunity to retell the stories  in the children’s own word and  act them out in their play. As well as imagine alternative endings. These all help develop communication and language skills.

Physical Development

This term we will be focusing on our letter and number formation, ensuring the children have the right patterns, formation and direction. It is vital we encourage these from the beginning, so the children do not form bad habits. We ask if your child is writing at home and forms a letter or number backwards that you work with them to write it the correct way. We will also be continuing  with fine motor activities to strengthen our hand and finger muscles. Click here for fine motor activities  and  not forgetting gross motor skills. Click on the link for additional   gross motor skills information.

Maths

We will continue with our number of the week, moving on to the teen numbers. We will be continuing to work on number recognition and representations of numbers. We will be adding and subtracting to 10 and beyond, focusing on number bonds to 10 using ten frames and part-whole models. As part of our shape and space work, we will be focusing on spatial awareness and 2D and 3D shapes.

Literacy

We will continue with our daily RWI lessons, focusing on our ‘special friends’, two letters that make one sound when together (for example: sh, th, qu, ng, nk, ch). When the children are confident decoding simple words we will teach and encourage them to ‘Fred in their head’ words to increase their fluency. Last term, we introduced  ‘red’ words. Red words are common, irregular words that the children must read on sight.

During the topic session, we will be focusing on writing single clause (simple) sentences and continue to use our phonic knowledge to write cvc words too. We will be writing wanted posters, speech bubbles, recipe cards, alternative endings and labelling characters.
