Reception Home Learning Week 12

Happy Monday Reception!

The weather may be cooler this week but we hope you are all excited for another week of fun learning! There are lots of activities for you to do, whether you are at school or at home. Remember to keep sending your teachers what you are doing at home, we love to hear from you! We hope you are all staying healthy and happy.

If you would like your child to return to school before the summer you need to either fill out the below form, call the office or drop the Reception Team an email by Wednesday 1st July. The last intake of pupils will be the week beginning the 6th July. Mr McLucas letter below explains in a little more detail.

Here’s what we’ve got planned this week…..

Writing

This week you can read or listen to the story ‘Zog’ by Julia Donaldson and design your own dragon! Zog is the keenest dragon in school. Think about what your dragon might look like, sound like, what do they like to do, what do they like to eat? Draw your dragon and then describe what they look like and what they like to do!

Don’t forget your finger spaces between words and remember to use the sound mat to help with letter formation.

Maths

This weeks maths focus is sharing. It is important when teaching sharing that the children understand the groups have to be equal. An example of a sharing problem would be “Nathan has 10 sweets. He shares them equally between his 5 friends. How many sweets does each friend get?” You could teach this using grapes, toys, lego or sweets.

Make sure you emphasise that when you’re sharing, that they go around and give each person one first and then if there is left over try and give more. If we have shared fairly everyone should have the same number of items.

White Rose Maths

This week’s Maths is based around the book Oliver’s Vegetables. You can listen to the story here.

Take a look at the activities, choose the ones you would like to do and let us know how you get on. https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/early-years/

Other Activities

  • Try some blind folded food taste testing! Can you guess what the food is? What does it taste like? What does it smell like? Does it make a noise?

  • Conduct an experiment using ice? How quickly can you make it melt? What happens when ice melts? You could try freezing some of your child’s toys or natural treasures from outdoors and have the children investigate different ways of melting them.

  • Try a new vegetable or food you’ve not tried before!

  • Order your daily routine. What do you do first, next, last. This could include activities like brushing your teeth, eating lunch, going to bed, story time, outside time etc.

Spellings

This week our spellings are a mixture of green and red words, remember to think about whether there is a ‘special friend’ or tricky part in the word. Keep practising the other words you might have found tricky so you can use these in your writing.

Practice writing these spelling everyday, ready for the test on Fridays. One of your teachers will read out these spellings in a video for you to have a go at home. You can find the test on the Facebook page or through the blog on the school website. Good luck!

Keep on Reading!
We know it is tricky to read everyday, and you may be growing a little tired of your books at home. However it is important to try and keep reading regularly. Oxford Owls has lots of online books of varying levels to read. You should also continue to share stories together, if you’re running out of books Youtube is full of storybooks and CBeebies also has a lot of stories and an app you can download for free. You might also like to get involved with the summer reading challenge mentioned above!

Nursery Home Learning Week 12

Good Morning Nursery,

We hope you all had a nice time last week and enjoyed the sunshine! It is a little cooler this week but we still have some fun activities for you. If you would like your child to return to school before the summer you need to either fill out the below form, call the office or drop the Nursery Team an email by Wednesday 1st July. The last intake of pupils will be the week beginning the 6th July. Mr McLucas letter here explains in a little more detail.week’s theme is based on What the Ladybird Heard by Julia Donaldson. The animals on the farm are always noisy, all except for the ladybird who never says a word. But when burglars plot to steal the farmer's fine prize cow, it's the quiet ladybird who comes up with the perfect way to stop their plan!

Understanding of the world - Can you draw a map of the farm and the robber’s plan?

Cooking activity - Ladybird Crackers

What you need:
Round crackers
whipped cream cheese
black olives
cherry tomatoes
chives or green onion top
chopped fresh herbs

What to do:
Spread a layer of cream cheese on a cracker.
Cut a cherry tomato in half for the body. Gently press it into the cream cheese so it stays in place.
Cut a black olive in half and attach one half to the front of the tomato to form a face.
Chop the other half of the olive into tiny pieces and attach to the tomato for the ladybird's spots.
Put two tiny dots of the cream cheese on the face to make the eyes. Top with a tiny piece of black olive.
Cut a chive or green onion top into two tiny strips and attach for the antennas.
Sprinkle chopped fresh herbs around the ladybird.

Creative - Build a Bug Hotel

We all know that insects need somewhere safe to live so why not build a bug hotel and place this in your outdoor space for children to investigate.

Counting backwards.  Practice your counting forwards and backwards. When counting backwards you can use this game to help you and learn the song '10 green bottles'. You could make your own bottles to help you!

Reception Home Learning Week 11

Good morning Reception!

We welcomed some children back to school last week which has been very exciting! It was lovely to see so many smiling faces and you all adapted and settled in fantastically! We will continue to post home learning blogs for those at home, and for the days that the children are not at school. Remember to apply your suncream this week and to wear a hat, it's going to be a hot one!

Important: Update your contact details!

The office are setting up a new email and text alert system. This is something we are hoping to use to share details regrinding transition to year one. Can we ask that everyone fills out the below form to update their contact details please. Thank you and please pass on to other families.

Returning to school

If you are thinking about returning to school, please ensure you read the following information and then fill out the attached form. One of the team will be in touch.

The Sneetches

You may want to listen or read the story, 'The Sneetches' to your children this week. Some of the Sneetches have bellies with stars, but the plain-bellied ones have none upon thars! But an unexpected visitor soon leads them to discover they're not that different after all. It will give children an opportunity to reflect on current global events and consider their own understanding of what is going on in our world.

Here’s what we’ve got planned this week…..

Word Hunt

A fun activity to do at home with past spelling words! These could be words you are currently practising or red ones. Find different ways to hide them around the house or use chalk to make a game!

Tales Toolkit

Before schools closed we had just begun using Tales Toolkit with the children to develop storytelling and language. Tales toolkit uses four symbols to structure the story and is easy for children to become familiar with. These symbols are character, setting, problem and solution.

Watch the video to find out what the character, setting, problem and solution are. Encourage your child to verbally create a story using these prompts. You may want to scribe their story for them or if your child is looking for a challenge after they have told the story they could have a go at writing it.

Writing

Write a letter to Fred the Frog!

Fred has been missing everyone while you have been at home! He would love if you wrote him a letter about what you have been doing while you have been at home. You can tell him about any activities you have been doing, what the weather has been like and maybe what you miss about school. Have you been cycling? Painting? Playing with your pet? Playing with your sibling/s? Fred wants to know! If you ask your adult to take a photo of your letter and send it to your teacher we will make sure we read your letters to Fred!

Plan your sentences out loud first and then have a go at writing them independently. Remember to use your sounds and fred fingers to help you spell each word! Don’t forget your finger spaces between words and remember to use the sound mat to help with letter formation.

Click here to use the Sound Mat

Maths

This weeks maths focus is number bonds to 10. Number bonds to 10 are pairs of number that, when added together, give the number 10. Examples are 1 + 9, 7 + 3 and 5 + 5. Recap with your child the addition symbol (+) and what addition means. Some ways to help teach number bonds would be to give your child ten counters (Lego bricks, pasta shapes, buttons, sweets, anythings works! ) and model ways of splitting the 10 counters in two groups and ask them questions such as: What do you add to 3 to make 10? What do you add to 2 to make 10? Encourage them to use the counters to work it out!

You could also print out or make number cards and ask your child to match them up into number pairs or number bonds.

Here’s a fun song to help with teaching number bonds to 10.

White Rose Maths

This week’s Maths is based around the book Zog, another written by Julia Donaldson. You can listen to the story here.

Take a look at the activities, choose the ones you would like to do and let us know how you get on. https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/early-years/

Other Activities

  • Can you find a stone and then explore different objects that are lighter and heavier than your stone? What does it mean if something is lighter or heavier? What objects are heavier? What are lighter? Why is it different?
  • Research some real life facts about Frogs. What do they look like? Where do they live?
  • Make a paper plate Fred the Frog.
  • Can you make a Frog life cycle (this one is edible, but you can use any resources you like)? What are the different stages? What will you use? Make sure to take photos and send them to your teacher!

Spellings

This week our spellings are a mixture of green and red words, remember to think about whether there is a ‘special friend’ or tricky part in the word. Keep practising the other words you might have found tricky so you can use these in your writing.

Nursery Home Learning Week 11 (Dancing video included)

Good Morning,

We hope you had a lovely week at home and enjoyed listening to the story of ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’. Here are some of the activities the children enjoyed doing at home and at Nursery. The weather is meant to be nice this week so we have kept to the mini-beast theme, make sure you look out for them when you are out and about and tell us any facts you learn!

Snack
Prepare some minibeast bug snacks this week. The children had been working hard to develop their knife skills in Nursery. They had been learning how to hold their hand in the correct position and push down remembering to hold the vegetables with the other hand. You could let them help you prepare some snacks. The ones below have a celery base and a scoop of cream cheese at the base. Then you could use cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, spinach leaves, olives, chives, apples, strawberries or whatever ingredient you would prefer to create the bug! You could use peanut butter as an alternative to cream cheese.
Whilst preparing the fruit and vegetables you can talk about what you notice. Is it crunchy, hard, soft, squishy? Why is the celery stringy? Can you spot the seeds? This supports the children to make observations and think about similarities and differences.

Maths
This game supports number recognition and counting in order. You can set it at a level to suit your child.

You could use pegs to practice your counting skills and match number to a quantity. These spiders/bugs could be made with card of any colours and washing pegs. Write on a number to start counting and matching your pegs.

Art
Can you make your own but with an empty toilet roll? Children can paint colour and decorate. (They don't need to look like perfect bugs at the end, the children will recognise what they have made!)

There is a wonderful selection of mini beast creative craft ideas at https://www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/blog/2019/06/minibeast-activities-crafts/

Literacy
Try and support the children to recognise their own name by writing it out for them. There are lots of fun ways you can support this.
Try practicing writing your child’s name with them if they can recognise it now. Check they are holding the pencil correctly, you want them to be working towards holding it in the dynamic tripod grip pictured below. Use a capital letter for the first letter and lower case (not capitals) for the rest of the name. You can support them by showing them the letter first and then letting them try or letting them trace over the name, it helps to just do this letter by letter.

The set 1 sounds are still available for learning at home through the Ruth Miskin website: https://www.ruthmiskin.com/en/find-out-more/parents/. If you need any support or are unsure of where to start with this please email eyfs@broadford.havering.sch.uk and we will be happy to support further.

Make sure you keep reading! Stories are really important. You can find lots of stories on Cbeebies if you are struggling to access books.

Miss St Louis has a story book to share with you all this week and a new story challenge for children to develop their story telling skills at home!
Room on the Broom

Story Challenge

You can join in the Summer Reading Challenge by clicking on the picture below and finding out more.

You will find lots of resources about empathy on the main facebook page this week. You could listen to this story called ‘I am Human’ to start talking about this subject with young children at home.

We have put together our dancing video for you all to see! We hope you enjoy. If you'd like to join in but haven't yet you can email your 5 second dance to eyfs@broadford.havering.sch.uk or upload to Evidence Me and we will update it for next week.

Have a lovely week, enjoy the sunshine and let us know what you do at home!

Dear parents and Carers,

We are looking forward to welcoming back some of our children on Thursday!

Morning drop off - 9.30am

We will not be using our usual gates to enter the school. You will enter through the large gate on Farringdon Avenue (near the new building). Please remember just one adult per family and to observe social distancing whist queuing to enter.

You will then head to the playground and stand on your colour dot, please be aware of other families and keep your distance.

If you are in Blue 1 bubble with Miss Poulter and Mrs Eve, you will need to line up on the first line of blue spots.

If you are in Blue 2 bubble with Mrs Gradley and Mrs Potter, you will need to line up on the second line of blue spots.

If you are in Yellow 1 bubble with Miss Metters and Mrs Ngenge, you will need to line up on the first line of yellow spots.

If you are in Yellow 2 bubble with Mrs Hathaway and Mrs Jackson, you will need to line up on the second line of yellow spots.

Pick up

When picking up your child, you will do exactly the same thing. You will enter through the gate, walk down to the playground and wait on the same colour spot as you did in the morning. At 3.15pm, the teachers will walk the the children out. When we can see their adult standing on the spot, we will send the children to their adult one at a time.

Here is a video showing images of the gate and spots
Reception Thursday Morning Drop Off Video

Things to remember
  • Water bottle (named)
  • Spare clothes to stay in school if not already there
  • School will provide pack lunches for all Reception children. If bringing a pack lunch, ensure it is in a named plastic bag.
  • Children will need to be wearing a clean set of clothes every day. If your child no longer fits in their uniform, they can wear other clothing. Please be sensible with clothing as we will still have messy play and painting but won't be able to put aprons on and we will also be outside.
  • Please leave all other bags, toys, books and belongings at home.

Reception Home Learning Week 10

Good morning Reception!

Although we will be welcoming some children back to school later this week, we will be continuing with our home learning and communication with those at home. If your child is attending school on Thursdays and Fridays, you may still want to follow some of our home learning ideas at the start of the week. Don’t forget that RWI Phonics are starting their ‘Hold a Sentence’ videos today, this will be great daily practice of all of writing techniques. Give it a go!

Apologies to anyone who has had trouble with Literacy Planet recently, there has been a few issues with the school renewing the subscription. Hopefully it should be up and running again now. If you have any problems please do let us know.

If your child is returning to school, this story might be a nice one to share with them before they start.

Summer Reading Challenge

The Summer Reading Challenge is an annual event aimed at 4 – 11 year olds. Children are encouraged to read six books of their choice during the summer holidays with collectable incentives and rewards, plus a certificate for every child who completes the Challenge.

This year, with the disruption caused by Covid-19 and the impact of social distancing on schools and public libraries, the all-new digital Summer Reading Challenge is launching earlier than usual to keep children reading over the summer and support parents and carers with children already at home.

The theme for the Challenge and associated marketing campaign is “Silly Squad” – a celebration of funny books, happiness and laughter, featuring bespoke artwork from award-winning children's author and illustrator, Laura Ellen Anderson.

You may want to scribe their story for them or if your child is looking for a challenge after they have told the story they could have a go at writing it. We would love to hear or read your stories Reception!

Writing

We all love the story The Gruffalo! If you have the story at home, read it together and encourage your child to join in with the repeated refrains. If you don’t, you can listen to the story on Youtube below.

When you are finished discuss what the Gruffalo looks like, encourage your child to use descriptive words. Your challenge this week is to make a ‘Wanted Poster’ to help catch the Gruffalo! Can you write a few sentences to describe the Guffalo, plan your sentences out loud first and then have a go at writing them independently. You could make your own wanted poster or use the template below. Remember once you’ve written your poster to stick it up (on the window, wall or outside, so people can see it! We would also love to see your posters so send us a photo too!

Don’t forget your finger spaces between words and remember to use the sound mat to help with letter formation.

Click here to use the Sound Mat

Maths

This week we suggest you recap doubling before moving on to halfing. To start with, look at halving objects. What does half mean? Do the two pieces need to be the same size? You could cut in half a piece of string, paper shapes (square, circle, rectangle), strips of paper, or pieces of food! The important thing when we discuss ‘halving’ is that the children know when you cut something in half, you get two pieces and these should be the same size!

Once your child understands what half means, you could begin to half quantities. Food works really well for this! I have eight sweets, can you split them in half? What is half of eight? If I have ten cheerios, what is half? You could use lego bricks, pasta, buttons, anything you can think of!

Hit the Button is an online game that focuses less on practical maths and more recall of facts. You can practice doubles, halving and number bonds (this also includes addition), as well as choose the level to practice at. It might be something your child would enjoy playing on, we advise you stick to the lower levels.

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button

White Rose Maths

This week’s Maths is based around the book Princess Mirror-Belle & the Dragon Pox. You can listen to the story here.

Take a look at the activities, choose the ones you would like to do and let us know how you get on. https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/early-years/

Other Activities

  • Floating and sinking. Collect a variety of objects from around the house. Which ones do you think will float or sink? Why do you think this? Is there any similarities between the items that floated and/or sunk?

  • Washing our hands experiment! This is one we will be doing in school this week…. https://www.bbc.co.uk/cbeebies/watch/germs-experiment
  • Create your own Gruffalo! What will you use? Will you draw it? Build it? Model it? Dress up as the Gruffalo?

Nursery Home Learning Week 10

Good Morning Nursery,

We hope you had a lovely week and have enjoyed the recent sunshine. We are welcoming back some children this week but will continue to support home learning. Please do continue to email eyfs@broadford.havering.sch.uk if you have any queries.

Our story this week is 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar'

Art
Can you make your own symettrical butterfly using paint? Look at the instructions below.

Can you make your own hungry caterpillar. You will need tubes or circle shapes, see how many circle shapes you can count?

Maths
Can you use finger printing to add the correct number to the caterpillar. You could use counters if you would prefer! You can either make your own sheet or you can print the following:  file:///home/chronos/u-d023b486cb59b81c5a7e69284e33e6da8c1167c8/MyFiles/Downloads/Caterpillar%20Counting%20(2).pdf

Understanding the World
Find out about how a caterpillar grows! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3kZD6rlSLUw
You could make your own representation of the life cycle, look at some of the ideas below.

Music
Can you learn this repetitive song about how a caterpillar develops?
https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p011sx96

Tales Toolkit
See if you can make up a story with a character, setting, problem and solution. Have a look at the video to see what's in the bag this week!

Tyson and Harry shared photos of their search for mini beasts last week. You can learn interesting facts about about the mini beasts you find using the Mini beast spotter https://www.bbc.co.uk/cbeebies/games/mini-beast-adventure-with-jess-minibeast-spotter

We hope you have a lovely week! Please continue to share your learning and playing through Evidence Me or by emailing eyfs@broadford.havering.sch.uk.
