Good morning Reception!
We hope you have had another super week at home. Sadly the weather has changed a little but I am sure we can all agree, that some rain is probably needed!
Thank you for being so patient regarding information of the school reopening for Reception pupils. Later today there will be a letter and a form posted on the blog and website, please read and fill this out even if you are choosing to keep your child at home. Can we also ask that you spread the word and let other Reception parents know.
If your child is returning to school, this story might be a nice one to share with them.
Here’s what we’ve got planned this week…..
RWI Phonics
From June 1st all lessons will be available at 9.30am and set one, two and three lessons will restart. Set two and three speed sound lessons will include new words for reading and spelling. There will also be daily videos to practice reading red words.
Starting on the 15th June there will also be videos for read and hold a sentence.
Joining in daily with the speed sound lessons, is one of our top recommendations to add into your daily timetable during lockdown. Remember you can find them on Youtube or Facebook.

Tales Toolkit
Before schools closed we had just begun using Tales Toolkit with the children to develop storytelling and language. Tales toolkit uses four symbols to structure the story and is easy for children to become familiar with. These symbols are character, setting, problem and solution.
Watch the video to find out what the character, setting, problem and solution are. Encourage your child to verbally create a story using these prompts. You may want to scribe their story for them or if your child is looking for a challenge after they have told the story they could have a go at writing it.
Phonics Hunt
Choose some special friends that your child has been learning (or single sounds if more appropriate) write them on a piece of paper each. Go on a hunt to find words around your house that include these special friends. It could be a word or an item they can see, which your child could write in the box, or add a photo of it. You might have some old newspapers, magazines or food packaging that you could cut words out of and stick onto your papers. Just chose a few sounds to start with, as the number in the photo, may be a bit much. You could continue this over the week, adding more words as you find them!
Maths
This week we are focusing on time. What is time? How long does it take you to do different things? Look for different clocks in your house and out and about. Are they all the same?
- Time yourself doing different activities. See if you can beat your previous time. Here are a few ideas, but feel free to add your own.
- Make a clock, this could be inside or out. Use your clock to learn about o’clock. You may want to add in ‘half past’ if your child does this with ease.
- Read or listen to ‘The Bad Tempered Ladybird’ by Eric Carle. You could use your clock to make the times as you listen along.
White Rose Maths
This week’s Maths is based around the book The Princess and The Wizard by Julia Donaldson. You can listen to the story here.
Take a look at the activities, choose the ones you would like to do and let us know how you get on. https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/early-years/
Other Activities
- Design and make a boat that can float! Think about the resources and materials you will use. Will they withstand the water or get soggy? Will they float or sink? Once your boat is finished fill a bowl, tray or bucket with water to test your boat. You might want to see how many coins your boat can hold before it sinks.
- Head outside to play ‘What’s the time Mr Wolf’. Encourage your child to say o’clock after the time and count their steps correctly!
- Build an obstacle course inside or outside. It might include things to balance along, jump over, actions such as star jumps, get creative. Time each other completing the course to see who is the fastest.
- Raindrop Races! Follow a raindrop down the window, what happens to it? Have a raindrop race with someone else, which drop will make it to the bottom first?
- Collect the rainfall in a container (you could use a water bottle cut in half). Measure how much rain has fallen each day.
Spellings
This week our spellings are a mix of green and red words, remember to think about whether there is a ‘special friend’ or tricky sound in the word. Keep practising the other words you might have found tricky so you can use these in your writing.
Practice writing these spelling everyday, ready for the test on Fridays. One of your teachers will read out these spellings in a video for you to have a go at home. You can find the test on the Facebook page or through the blog on the school website. Good luck!
