EYFS Parent and Carer blog: Stammering

 STAMMERING

There is no known reason for stammering; however, it can run in families and is more common in boys than girls.

"5% of children stammer at some point when learning to talk."

WHAT DOES STAMMERING SOUND LIKE?

-          Not being able to get started for several seconds (“…… my train goes really fast”)

-          Tense or jerky speech

-          Putting extra effort into saying words

-          Repeating part of a word (“ca ca can I”)

-          Repeating the whole word (“the the the…”)

-          Stretching out sounds (“Can I hhhhave a cake?”)

-          A sound becomes stuck and nothing comes out (“……please”)

-          Avoiding certain words

Some children may have additional movements such as blinking, stamping or tensing to help them get their words out.

FACTS:

-          5% of children stammer at some point when learning to talk.

-          At any age, stammering can come and go.

-          Fluency may change depending on the situation a child is in, how they are feeling, who they are talking to, and what it is that they are trying to say.

-          Approximately 1% of children continue to stammer into adulthood.

-          Parents are not to blame for stammering, but they can help their child become more fluent.

STAMMERING IS NORMAL

Stammering is common in children between the ages of 2-5 years. This is when children are rapidly developing their language skills, such as learning new words and using longer sentences.

Stammering may be ‘episodic’ – it might appear to come and go.

HOW TO HELP YOUR CHILD:

Attention:

Show your child you are listening by stopping what you’re doing and turning to looking at them.

Play:

-         - Set aside a few minutes each day to give your child your full attention.

-         -Keep the situation calm and relaxed.

-       -   Play with what they want to play with and talk about what they want to talk about.

Language:

-          Use simple language with your child, “oh, we’re playing bricks” rather than “oh that’s right, you and I are going to sit and play with your bricks now aren’t we”.

-          Pay attention to what your child is saying, not how they say it

Speech:

-          Slow the pace of your own speech down when talking with your child.

-          Avoid telling your child to calm down, slow down, think or start again.

Reception Learning - Week 1

RECEPTION LEARNING - SPRING 2 WEEK 1

Welcome back Reception!  We hope you all had a wonderful half term.

We have had an exciting week in Reception with the installation of our new pulley system in our outdoor learning area . The builders arrived on Tuesday morning and the children sat on the benches watching them install the new pulley system.

Our new area is helping to develop the children's physical skills and strength, in particular their gross motor skills and shoulder stability. Shoulder stability is important as it creates a strong foundation for arm, wrist and hand movements. Large joints close to the body need to be stable to allow for smaller, coordinated movements to occur such as handwriting.

The children have shown great reciprocity skills by collaborating together and listening to each other. They have been curious about learning, made links between ideas, shown great imagination, and capitalised on resources.

Look how much fun the children have had exploring the new area.

Nikita “Look I can pull it up”

Roza “This is so cool, look at me balancing it!”

Subhan “Pull, Pull”

Iustin "I am strong"

Alfie "This is cool, it's a balancing thing"

Darcey "I have filled it up... all up to the top"

Maths

This week we have been exploring length and height. The children have begun to use language to describe length and height, such as the tree is tall and the pencil is short.   The children made a height chart in their classrooms then had lots of fun ordering the class by height, going from shortest to tallest.  One of our maths activities was to order the images by length.
The children really enjoyed this activity.

Harry “It's the longest!”

Fatima “This is short”

Theo "This one is the longest"

Noah "This one is short"

Kylie" This is the biggest one"

Lirsa " It is the smallest one"

Success " YES! I did it"

Key Vocabulary: Height, length, short, tall, long, measure.

How to support your child this week at home.

Who is the tallest member of your family? Ask your child to arrange family members by height order.

Gather a range of your children's toys and ask your child to arrange them by height or length. Ask questions such as: "Can you predict which toy is the tallest?"  "Which toy do you think is the shortest?" "Why?"  "Which toy is of medium height/length?"

Literacy

Supertato took over over writing areas in the Reception classrooms. The children have thoroughly enjoyed this week and our theme of Supertato.

To listen to the Supertato story with your child, click here.

Our focus in Literacy this week was to write a shopping list. The children thought about the vegetables that they saw in the story and used their phonic skills to list the items. We discussed the importance of a list; to help us to arrange, record, and remember things.

Abbas "I like eating fruit"
Emma  "Tommy,  I buy fish fingers"

Munsha "p p p potato"

Huy "T t tomato"

Araoluwa "I like writing shopping lists at home"

Harvey " I have potatoes on my list"

P.E

We had lots of fun in our PE lesson this week. As the weather wasn't all that great we went in to the new hall and the children completed a warm up with Miss Mullan, an obstacle course with Miss Onabiyi and learnt how to safely complete a forward roll with Mrs Hathaway.
They ended with a warm down to some music.

They all had lots of fun and really built up a sweat (well the teachers definitely did!)

Book of the week

The children have loved listening to Little Red Riding Hood, listening to different versions of the story and talking about the similarities and differences between each story book. Many children found the wolf to be scary. All of the children agreed we should not speak to strangers and we should all listen to our grown ups who try to keep us safe.

Please click the link below if you wish to listen to the story at home with your child.

Little Red Riding Hood

Our topic focused learning

This week the children have been learning about Traditional tales. We listened to little red riding hood and looked at fiction books involving wolf characters like the wolfs pancakes and no dinner. The children have also enjoyed playing with small world farm animals and characters to create their own stories.

Group time listening to traditional tales

I’m painting the big bad wolf

Acting out our stories using the small world

Marking pictures of our focus story

This weeks learning

The children have enjoyed coming back to nursery after the half term to see their friends and teachers. We have been counting and learning about the number zero, creating elaborate small world settings and helping our friends learn new skills.

Making zero using body parts

Practicing our counting to 10 playing games

Discovering how the wind blows

Supporting each other with our scissor skills

Focused 2 year old activities

This week the toddler group has been focusing on the traditional tale of the three little pigs. Using prompts they have been acting the story, building and knocking down towers and blowing over objects like the big bad wolf.

We have also practiced our numbers 0 to 5 and a new nursery rhyme- open shut them. Please click the link below if you would like to sing along with your child at home.

Focus child Meetings

Each week children will be chosen to be observed by their keyworker. Emails will be sent home to inform parents of the upcoming parent meeting taking place the following week, either in person or via telephone. Parents will have an opportunity to complete a form asking questions and sharing concerns they may have for the key worker to answer during the parent meeting. This form will be sent via email. Please check your emails weekly for school communications and evidence me parents share from your children's teachers. Parents are welcome to upload pictures and videos of their children at home.

Chicken pox

We would like to make all parents aware that some children within the class have come down with chicken pox. Chicken pox commonly appears as small red spots which eventually blister. Chicken pox is contagious. We have included a link from the NHS with information regarding chicken pox and what to look for. Please check your children regularly for spots. Please keep children at home until the spots have cleared up to prevent further spread of the virus and seek medical attention if required.

NHS information - chicken pox

Key Information

Please LABEL  all your children's belongings, including both shoes. Please do not send your child in with a school bag as we have very limited space and all spare clothing should be stored in the nursery. Please do not send your child in with water bottles as we have cups stored in the nursery. Most importantly please do not allow children to bring toys from home into the nursery as they may get lost, cause conflict with other children or become a dangerous hazard.
