Year Reception- What we have been learning w/c 04.05.2026

Year Reception: What We Are Learning

This term our topic is Plants and Growth. Our focus book this week was My bean diary.

Here is what we have been up to:

The children continued observing their bean plants and were excited to notice the changes compared to last week! The plants had grown taller and developed more leaves.

The children used their mathematical skills to build beanstalks using counting cubes. They were encouraged to recognise and build teen numbers independently. This activity helped secure their understanding of counting beyond ten and the composition of numbers. The children also worked on their measuring skills and hand-eye coordination while attempting to plant more beans without adult support.

On Friday,we learned about and celebrated Victory in Europe Day. The children made their own Union Jacks, created paper chains, and wrote letters to the soldiers thanking them for their bravery and for saving our country.

In Literacy we recapped our red words the,a,I,of,he,go,to,my,was, you,we,they, she and remembered that sentences begin with a capital letter and end with a full stop. This week we learnt how to write the red word ‘have’ and wrote our own bean diaries.

Please continue to read 5 times a week with your children and work on set 1,2 or 3 sounds as well as word time words (1.5, 1.6, 1.7 etc).

In Maths this week the children have been exploring addition and subtraction within 10. They learnt new vocabulary such as add, plus, more, together, take away, minus, less and smaller and were encouraged to use these words while working in pairs.

The children also practised writing numbers to 20 and correcting their marvellous mistakes, such as writing 7,9 and 3 backwards.

It’s been a short but very busy week! Well done, Reception - keep up all your brilliant work!
