             Term: Spring 1

Dear Parents and Carers,

A warm welcome back to the Spring term from the Reception team!

We hope you find this curriculum letter informative. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any queries using our reception mailbox:  reception@broadford.havering.sch.uk

Please contact the school office if you need to pass on messages throughout the day, e.g- change of adult picking up. The school office will then let the class teacher know.

PE

The child’s PE day will be on a Thursday. We request that your child comes into school wearing their PE kit. This should consist of black/navy jogging bottoms or shorts, a white t-shirt and trainers. They will not need to change back into their uniform so there is no need to send this in as well.

The focus in PE for this term will be teamwork, alongside this we will continue to develop the fundamental skills of movement, balance, coordination, flexibility and agility.

Reading

The children’s reading is progressing well, with some strong sound recognition and blending skills. The more they practice these skills the more fluent your child will become at decoding words, this then allows them to develop their comprehension skills. Try to make reading a part of your daily routine, finding a time that this fits in with your schedules at home. This could be when you first get home from school or after dinner. Record this is in your child’s reading record, for it to be counted towards awards and certificates.  Encourage your children to take part in the 105 Books to read before you leave Broadford challenge. Please remember to bring your child’s reading folder into school on their reading day.

Phonics

The children have made good progress in our RWI programme. We will be continuing to develop oral blending skills (Fred Talk) and using these skills to help spell words (using Fred Fingers). Please refer to the video links below for more information.

We practise letter formation every day in reception but your child will greatly benefit from 1:1 practice at home alongside this. If you are able to support your child in this way, please watch this short clip on letter formation so you teach the correct phrase alongside each sound.

Literacy

Stories are a key part of our curriculum and high quality texts will be used throughout the day to foster the children’s love of reading. This half term we will be reading a selection of traditional tales during our topic sessions and this will include: The Gingerbread Man, The Three Little Pigs and Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Please check out our blogs to see what the children have been up to.

Maths

This half term our focus will be on representing zero, comparing numbers up to 5, composition of numbers to 5, we will then build on composition of numbers and look at the composition or numbers 6, 7 and 8. This will deepen the children’s number sense and basic math skills. The children will use a range of resources to show their mathematical thinking and will practise and revisit concepts until they are confident enough to apply it independently to a range of situations and talk about their process.

Mathletics - All children have their Mathletics login information in their reading record book. Please continue to encourage the children to use this platform to help support and develop their early numeracy skills.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development.
To support the development of the children’s personal, social and emotional skills, we continue to explore the Zones of Regulation.  Rooted in cognitive behavioural therapy, the Zones of Regulation is a framework that uses four colours: blue, green, yellow and red to help them identify their feelings. The children are then given a range of tools to help them regulate themselves and deal with the different feelings and emotions that they will be experiencing. In Reception, we explore the Zones of Regulation through our adult carpet times and through stories and try to explore a different zone each week.
