World Book Day in Nursery

Wow! What a day we have had in Nursery celebrating World Book Day 2023. Thank you to all parents and carers for the amazing costumes, the children have a had a brilliant day!

Today we have immersed ourselves in lots of stories and poetry. We have spent time creating a character to decorate our classroom doors. The children showed great reciprocity skills in working together to create a collaborative piece of art.

Nursery Learning- 03.03.23

 Nursery Learning- 03.03.23

This week the children have been reading 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar'. The enjoyed naming the fruits and following the transformation from  caterpillar to butterfly. They then used the provisions set up in the tuff tray to recreate the story.

Caterpillar Snacks

The children enjoyed creating faces with our snack area this week. They spread cream cheese over rice crackers and then selected toppings to make their own creations.

Dough Disco!

The children had a super time making their own playdough. After reading ' The Snail and the Whale' during their choice time, they decided to make some sea creatures. The children used their hands to roll the dough and the playdough tools to make mouth. They also chose the googly eyes they wanted to really bring the creatures to life!

Crazy Cars
This week the children were exploring the paints without paint brushes! They used their hands and cars to make different makes on the paper. They enjoyed looking at the different prints and the colours that were made when the different paints mixed.

Hide and Seek!!
The children were desperate to play hide and seek outside- so we did! They took turns to count while everyone else went and hid. The children liked to all hide together in the same play (which made it a bit of a give away) but it didn't spoil their fun.

Maths
Maths is everywhere in nursery. These two girls were practising their counting by posting the bricks in the hoop. They counted up to 18 before they ran out of bricks.

Marvellous Maths in Reception 03.03.23

Marvellous Maths in Reception

This week in maths the children revisited ordering numbers 1 to 10.  Later in the week, the children learnt about length and height. We explored height by using a height chart. The children loved seeing how tall they were.  We also spent time exploring length. The children  used objects such as cubes to measure items in the classroom. We then moved onto ordering these items from shortest to longest.

Take a look at the activities the children completed throughout the week.

Activities

Happiness: : "1 is the smallest number"

Khushbakht: "8 comes next"

Ameerah: "Let's see who is taller!"

Maya: "Mine is longer than Elliot's"

Charlie:" The book is 10 cubes long"

Ashvik: The ruler is very long"

Key Vocabulary

Long, short, tall, longer, shorter, taller, wider, narrower

Wow! What a day we have had in Reception celebrating World Book Day 2023.

We were also lucky enough to receive a visit from author Natalie Newman, who read us her new story.

The Crayon Man

The Crayon Man

As part of our 'Inventors' topic, Reception have been reading 'The Crayon Man'. A lovely story based on Edwin Binney's invention of the Crayola Crayon. This has supported the children's understanding of what the word 'invention' means and we have spent the week exploring crayons and  colour!

The children in reception have been exploring crayons, using them in lots of different ways including to make 'scratch art'. They used crayons to colour their page and then painted it with black paint mixed with a small amount of washing up liquid. Fast forward to the following day and it was time scratch! The children enjoyed creating their own designs by scratching the paint away to reveal rainbows colours underneath. This was a great opportunity to explore different creative techniques and really got those hand muscles working hard!

We have also read 'The Day The Crayons Quit' linking to PSHE. We were impressed with the children's application of their knowledge of the zones of regulation as they confidently explained how red crayon was so furious he must be in the red zone!

He's frustrated! He's in the yellow zone - Anu
I think he's in the blue zone. He's sad he doesn't get to colour' - Maya
