The Crayon Man

The Crayon Man

As part of our 'Inventors' topic, Reception have been reading 'The Crayon Man'. A lovely story based on Edwin Binney's invention of the Crayola Crayon. This has supported the children's understanding of what the word 'invention' means and we have spent the week exploring crayons and  colour!

The children in reception have been exploring crayons, using them in lots of different ways including to make 'scratch art'. They used crayons to colour their page and then painted it with black paint mixed with a small amount of washing up liquid. Fast forward to the following day and it was time scratch! The children enjoyed creating their own designs by scratching the paint away to reveal rainbows colours underneath. This was a great opportunity to explore different creative techniques and really got those hand muscles working hard!

We have also read 'The Day The Crayons Quit' linking to PSHE. We were impressed with the children's application of their knowledge of the zones of regulation as they confidently explained how red crayon was so furious he must be in the red zone!

He's frustrated! He's in the yellow zone - Anu
I think he's in the blue zone. He's sad he doesn't get to colour' - Maya
