Before starting the children washed their hands with soap and talked about the importance of this in keeping our bodies healthy. "We have germs on our hands" said Olivia as she explained why needed to wash them.
The children looked at the variety of fruit and checked they could name them all. They then set to work agreeing what fruits to add and chopping them up with care. The children then discussed and agreed on whether they wanted to add orange or apple juice. They added some yogurt and some groups decided they wanted milk in theirs.
Before we turned the blender on, the children looked closely at the mixture and made predictions at what they thought might happen to the fruit. It was then time to blend the smoothie, which made quite a lot of noise. "It sounds like a storm!" exclaimed Isaac. The children enjoyed watching the colours and consistency change and commented on what they had observed. "It's turned pink, it looks like strawberries!" said Zuriel. Lucas suggested that it had melted and this sparked a discussion about what melting means. We looked closely at the blades on the blender and decided that it had chopped up the fruit into really small pieces instead of melting it.
Then for the best bit... tasting the smoothies! They were delicious and enjoyed by many children. There was a lot of empty cups and sticky faces. What a great way to get in some of your 5-a-day!
