Marvellous Maths in Reception

This week in reception, the children have been learning to add more. We explored this through mathematical stories such as acting out a bus journey. The children were able to see that the numbers of items/ people in a group can be changed by adding one more. We used the first, now, then sequence to show the change in the quantity of the group. 

E.g. First there were 3 people on the bus. 

Then 2 more got on the bus. 

Now there are 5 people on the bus. 

   

The children explored this further during their group activities and used ten frames to represent number sentences. 

Activities: 

Elyssa: "5 add 2 is 7" 

Farzaan: "There are 7 altogether"

Eridola: " 3 add 2 is 5" 

Adam: "There are 5 altogether" 

Anika: " 3 ad 4 equals 7"

Tommy: " 6 and 4 makes 10"
