Marvellous Maths in Reception

This week in reception, the children have been learning to subtract. We learnt different ways to say subtract such as minus and take away. The children used real objects to see how the quantity of a group can be changed by taking items away. 

We carried on with the first, next, now structure to support the understanding of taking away. The children were encouraged to count out numbers at the start, take away a certain amount and count the remaining items in the group.

We represented number stories using number tracks, ten frames and numicon. 

E.g. First there were 10 people on the bus. 

Then 2 people got off the bus. 

Now there are 8 people on the bus.

Alariah: "5 add 4 equals 9"

Eridola: "7 take away 3 is 4"

Damian: "4 take away 2 is 2" 

Teo: " 6 take away 1 is 5" 

Inaya: " 10 take away 2 equals 8" 

Harrie: " 7 take away 4 is 3"
