Nursery Learning - Week of 8th May 2023
Special moments this week
Zenaya has been growing caterpillars at home with her family. She has been sharing her knowledge with us at nursery. Zenaya told us how she watched her caterpillars develop into butterflies, which she released this week in her garden. Nursery teachers would like to thank Zenaya for sharing her new knowledge and experience, along with her butterfly photos.
Baking Banana muffins
This week the children have enjoyed making Banana muffins. The children identified each ingredient and discussed what makes each ingredient different from the other. For example the differences between flour, baking soda and baking powder which all are white in colour. The children enjoyed sharing their knowledge with each other as to where the ingredients come from, such as Mason's knowledge that chickens lay eggs and Luca who knew we can buy flour at Tesco. The children practised their numeracy skills; counting to ten and counting down from five when taking turns mashing bananas and mixing ingredients together. We also reinforced our weeks learning on the number zero and its meaning when measuring and counting.Learning about the number Zero
This week the children have been introduced to Ten Town, A maths resource for the early years which has characters, songs and activities to support numeracy skills. This week the children were introduced to Ten Town's Zero pond. The children learned all about the number Zero and have been playing fun games during group time to help support their understanding, as well as develop their mathematical language. learning about zero the children have discussed the links between numerals and quantity, with some children developing their understanding of using zero in addition.
Parents are welcome to discover Ten town at home with your children using the link below.

Outdoor activities
The children have been practising their gross motor movements in the garden at nursery this week. Using obstacle courses, creates and wooden planks the children have been fine tuning their physical skills. In particular, balancing which enhances the bodies core muscles later supporting posture for writing and jumping which supports coordination and spatial awareness. The children have also been practising their turn taking, which supports their emotional literacy; dealing with big feelings, grasping concepts of empathy towards others and how we make good choices.
Junk modelling
The children have had so much fun junk modelling this week. We have seen some fantastic creations go home and listened to even more wonderful ideas, stories and language development as they have played. We only hope our children's families love all the art work as much as the children enjoy creating them.
Gardening with our friends
The children have discovered a love of gardening with their teachers over the past few weeks, leaning about plants, flowers and wildlife within the garden. This week we enhanced our garden by adding strawberry plants. The children very much enjoyed adding soil, using gardening gloves and tools to plant the seeds. They also helped teachers to add the milk bottle plants to the fencing which in time they will decorate. Please feel free to talk to the children about our strawberry plants and how they may grow. The children have already been caring for our plants by watering them using watering cans.
