Pre-birth and Pregnancy

New Beginnings will cover all aspects of making the transition to becoming a parent with a focus on the practical tasks of caring for a baby and looking to support the parent’s emotional and physical wellbeing. 


The workshop enables will focus on supporting a parent to:-

• Bond with baby before/after the birth

• Explore the practical tasks of caring for a new baby

• Working out baby’s sounds, signals and cues

• Coping with crying and comforting a baby

• Exploring how parents can look after their emotional and physical well-being.

Who is it for? Anyone expecting a baby – mums, dads and carers – from 28 weeks of pregnancy.

When is it? Every Tuesday at 10am-12pm

Becoming Dad is a 4-week course with a weekly one-hour session for men who are soon to be dads. Whether you are a first time dad or already a parent/carer, Becoming Dad will explore the practical and emotional aspects of the journey to fatherhood and beyond.  

The course will also give dads to be the time to come together to share their concerns, excitement and expectations of becoming a dad. If you would like to find out more about the Becoming Dad course, please contact childrenscentres@havering.gov.uk 

 

Butterflies Peer Support Group Supporting families who are experiencing low mood, depression and anxiety during pregnancy or following the birth of their baby. Telephone support and weekly Zoom group available. Please contact butterflies@havering.gov.uk for more information. 

 

Butterflies perinatal peer support group are also now offering a fathers only group to provide support where a partner or themselves are experiencing low mood, anxiety or depression since becoming a parent. Mellow Bumps Antenatal Programme

A 7 week online antenatal programme designed to support parents-to-be. Mellow Bumps is a relaxed, safe environment to explore: Bonding with bump, looking after emotional wellbeing during pregnancy and after birth, building confidence and self-esteem as a new parent, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, thinking about how babies communicate, and learning about services and support in the local community once baby is born.

Baby Massage

Our Baby Massage course is now being facilitated by our trained Infant Massage Instructors online via Zoom over five weeks. Baby Massage can support a babies overall development, help relax baby and parent/carer, support digestive issues like wind, gas and colic, promote better sleep habits and support the relationship between parent/carer and baby. Infant Feeding Café

Trained Infant feeding advisors are available to provide support and information on breastfeeding, bottle-feeding, expressing, formula feeding. Telephone support and weekly Zoom group available.

Starting Solids Workshop

Starting Solid Foods (for babies around 4 months old). In this workshop you will learn about starting and progressing with solid foods with your baby in a practical and friendly session with an early years practitioner and a health professional.

Incredible Years Babies Parenting Programme

A 8-10 week parenting programme focusing on improving the parent infant relationships and attachment by promoting positive parenting strategies. Suitable for ages 0-8 months.

Activities 0-5 years


Baby Stay and Play Online Baby Stay and play group via Zoom, for babies and their parent/carer to connect with other families, discuss various parenting topics and enjoy some interactive song and rhyme time with one of our early years practitioners. Guest speakers are invited with topics covered including sleep, oral health and car & home safety.

Musical Jelly Beans-Get active and get moving with our fun, interactive, music, singing and rhyming online session. Activities include dancing, singing, parachute games and bubbles. For ages 0 to 5 years

Toddler Stay and Play- This is play session for families with children aged 18 – 30 months. It gives parents the chance to socialise with other families in the comfort of their own home joined by our Early Years Practitioners. The sessions are themed and will change on a monthly basis. In addition to this there will be a structured activity plus a messy play activity each week.

Ready Steady Talk! - An early communication group delivered over 5 weeks online with a 45 minute Zoom session. The programme is for children having difficulties in their home language between the ages of 18 months and 30 months.

The group will help to:

 

Develop a child’s attention and listening, and turn-taking skills

Develop strategies that can be used at home to encourage language development

Support the development and expansion of a child’s vocabulary through play and group activities

Encourage a child to use those important first words to name or request items in their environment


Oral Health Workshops

The children’s centres host Virtual Oral Health Workshop for parents with children aged 0-5 years led by a Dental Nurse each month. The workshop covers a number of areas to promote good oral health including tooth brushing, preventing tooth decay and infection, diet and dental visits. Home safety workshop via Zoom virtual delivery:

This is a 40-minute workshop full of information and tips on keeping babies and children safe in the home and when out and about. In this session, the Early Years practitioners will guide your through top tips for child safety, including burns, poisoning, falls, choking, safer sleeping, drowning and more.

 

Toileting workshop via zoom virtual delivery:

This is a 40 minute workshop designed to support families through their child’s potty training journey. Through this session Early Years Practitioner’s will provide information and guidance with: recognising and understanding  the signs that your child may be ready to start potty training, when/ how to start, building a toileting routine, potty training on the go, plus many other useful factors and tips.

 

Fussy eating workshop via zoom virtual delivery:

Meal times are a common source of stress for parents. Often children learn they can gain some control over their parents using food. When a child refuses food or demands alternative meals, parents may become frustrated or concerned that their child is not eating enough. We will provide tips designed to help you manage meal times and to develop good eating behaviours. Early Years Practitioners will be running fussy eating workshops online. We focus on attention on equipping parents with healthy weaning and food choices knowledge to give children the best start in life. Mealtimes should be all about sharing, laughter, fun and love!

HENRY (Health, Exercise & Nutrition for the Really Young) Healthy Families Programme This is an 8-week programme, which supports families in achieving healthy lifestyle goals. We are aiming to co-deliver an online-facilitated course co-delivered with colleagues from Health

 

Our team of early year’s practitioners are all trained in a range of specialist areas and can offer support on a one to one basis which includes providing advice on infant feeding, early communication skills, parenting, child development, toileting, sleep, perinatal mental health, healthy eating and oral health. They can also assist with supporting online applications for the 2, 3 & 4 year old educational funding offers.
