Fox's Socks & Remembrance Day
This week we have been learning about the story 'Fox's Socks'. We have made sock patterns, puppets from the story and we have enjoyed learning to retell the story.
Learning to retell a story is an important skill for building reading comprehension and writing skills in young children. Children need to develop verbal story telling skills before they can apply them to writing. To tell a good story children need to understand the components of story structure.
By reading a story and asking your child to tell you what happened, or by asking your child questions about the story, you can significantly increase your child's ability to remember details and patterns. You might want to start story retelling with familiar books you've read before, or wait until you've read a book several times before asking your child to tell you about what happens, especially for younger preschoolers. If your child has trouble answering or makes mistakes in the sequence, you can use the book's pictures to help them remember.
If you would like to lend a copy of Fox's Socks to read at home, please ask a member of staff.
Remembrance Day
The children in Nursery also participated in some remembrance day activities, including manipulating the playdough to make representations of poppy's.
