Painting with Textures

In Nursery today the children have been adding some kitchen ingredients into paint for free exploration and to see what effect each would have on the texture created. Into some bowls we collected salt, flour, oats and white glue. They were encouraged to mix and stir the resources available and compare the different textures. 
The children had lots of fun creating their pictures and were fascinated to see the changes as they dried, with the glue-paint becoming shiny and hard, the salt paint glistening and the flour paint becoming thick and rough. Promoting language in all areas is very important at this age and the activity prompted the children to use some fantastic descriptive language.

Colours and Rainbows in Nursery

Nursery have enjoyed reading stories relating to colours. After reading the story 'Cat's Colours' the children went on a colour hunt in the environment, they were able to name many of the colours and some children even began to notice how many different shades of one colour we could see around us. They were very fortunate to find a perfect rainbow outside containing all of the colours they had been searching for!

Freddie Four visits Reception!

The Reception children were very fortunate to have a special visitor last week..... Freddie Four! The children were introduced to the Ten Town characters at the start of the school year and have been using them to help form their numbers correctly since. Each number is a different character and it comes with a story and a rhyme to help remember how to form the number.

Freddie Four is currently touring Primary School's across the country and Broadford Primary School were fortunate enough to be paid a visit. The children were avidly awaiting Freddie's arrival, so when the box arrived in Apple Class one afternoon, there was lots of excitement. "I think its Freddie Four in the box!" said Madalina. "Look in his backpack, he has four of everything" exclaimed Iyinope as he excitedly tried out the telescopes. The children have really enjoyed playing with Freddie, showing him around our outside area and exploring the contents of his backpack - he really does own four of everything!

Our new interactive whiteboards have been a big hit and ideal for practicing our number formation on the Ten Town game......down, across, oar in the water!

       This week we will be reading the humorous  text  ‘ Aliens Love Underpants’, this is a great story for provoking the children's imaginations and as always we will be linking it to various cross curricular activites.

      Each half term we will be setting our pupils a challenge related to their learning. We believe that it is important for us to provide guidance for parents on how their children's learning can be extended at home.
      The learning challenge will include either a nursery rhyme, famous person,  illustration or a piece of music. Please talk to your child about the challenge and help them to engage in their learning. The children can choose how they present their learning challenge outcomes to their teacher or class.

Nursery Newsletter 28.11.16

Dear Parents and Carers,

This week we are focusing on the story 'Pete the Cat: My Four Groovy Buttons.'

These are the skills we will be focusing on this week:
Mathematics 
Counting down with Pete as he looses his buttons in the story. Showing the correct number of fingers to represent a number and reciting number names in order.

Physical
Showing balance and control when playing running and chasing games.

Literacy 
They will be joining in with Nursery Rhymes and learning actions to help them recall these and following on from last week listening carefully to the different sounds instruments make and beginning to play simple rhythms.
We will be learning to recall, describe and discriminate between different sounds in focus groups this week.

Communication and Language
Encouraging children to use simple sentences correctly.
Modelling the correct use of tense e.g. "I went to the park".
Encouraging children to hold a conversation and respond to comments.

Personal and Social Development
Ensuring children are able to co-operate with routines and some boundaries.
Modelling the correct behaviours in play, ensuring children use resources well and begin to share with other children.


Messages 
The children are encouraged to use the outside area in all weathers as long as they are suitably dressed. Most children now have a pair of wellies in school. It would also be a good idea to bring in waterproof coats/macs with the children. These can either go home with the children or stay in school on their pegs. 


The EYFS Nativity for Nursery and Reception will be on December the 12th. 

Remember all children need to apply for their place in Reception regardless of whether they have attended the Nursery. You need to apply online at: www.havering.gov.uk/eAdmissions.  If you need support to apply please see Miss Tynan in the Nursery and we will help.

Star Readers!

Congratulations to all of our star readers in Reception this week!

Receiving their bronze star reader award are Hannah, Carla, Christian, Lukas, Lilly Wells, Kyriq, Aleena, Daisy and Siena.

Keira Atkinson and Riley Twum-Ampofo have now read 25 books to receive their bookmarks.

Amy Cullum has read over 50 books receiving her silver award and a £5 book voucher.

Sophia Ariyo, Ethan Carruth and Laura Olatunji are the first children in Reception this year to have read over 75 books, wow! This means they will all be awarded with a book of their choice to take home, read and keep. What will they choose?

A spaceship has landed in Reception!


A spaceship has landed in Reception! The children arrived to school Monday morning wondering why there was so much silver in the role play area. They quickly discovered it was a spaceship, put on their space outfits and got ready for an adventure in Space. "Ahhh, aliens have landed on Earth! Quick we must go help save the day" exclaimed Ruby Welch as she answered the phone in the spaceship.

The role play area provides a fantastic environment for children to use and develop their imagination. As the children begin to add narratives to their play they continue to develop their communication and language skills as well as their relationships with their peers. The children quickly found space writing paper, clipboards and whiteboards and began to write and mark make. We encourage children to mark make and apply their phonics within their play throughout the year. This builds and develops the skills they have been taught during their RWI lessons.

"10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, blast off!" counted Jaevon and Ethan as they began their mission into space. "Watch out for Aliens everyone!" warned Tavia to the others as they took off. "We need to walk like this" said Abdulmalik as he demonstrated a slow moon walk around the classroom.

Lets hope the children from Reception can continue to protect Broadford from an invasion of Aliens!

      We will be reading  ‘What ever next?’ this week and linking it to various cross curricular activities.   We are very lucky because Miss Poulter has built an amazing space rocket, which all of the children can access in Apple Class.
